Thriving Through Transition: Self-Care for Parents and Friends of Transgender People of All Ages

For the therapist to increase awareness and receive updated and practical information needed for effective work with parents, family members and those struggling with another’s transition. Also, to be aware of ethical issues and dilemmas therapists face working with transgender clients and their families and how to work through them.



Workshop Objectives:

  1. To identify 12 Reasons why it can be hard for parents when they learn they have a transgender child.

  2. To differentiate between gender dysphoria and various gender non-compliant identities.

  3. To be able to identify specific characteristics of a social vs medical transition ad how to discuss options of each with clients and families.

  4. To be able to describe and articulate at least 3 ethical issues the therapist deals with when working with transgender families and how to work through them.

Denise O’Doherty LPC, MSN, LMFT, RN, a native New Yorker, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Certified IMAGO Relationship Therapist, and a Registered Nurse. She has a full-time private practice in Houston for 25+years and has been a Clinical Instructor for the University of Texas at Houston School of Nursing. In her practice, Denise specializes in Relationship Counseling, Pre-Marital Counseling, Addiction, Recovery, Codependency, and Gender Identity Conditions.


Denise is an educator, gender advocate and author. Her book, “Thriving Through Transition- Self-Care for Parents of Transgender Children” made the Amazon best seller list in September of 2018. The book is presently being published in Spanish. Her more recent book, “Personal Boundaries and Effective Confrontation – a Workbook” is coming out on Amazon next month. (September 2019)
