Family Research in Differentiation of Self: The Basis for Bowen Family Systems Psychotherapy

This workshop is based on Victoria Harrison’s popular new book, The Family Diagram and Family Research: Tools for Differentiation of Self. She will discuss and illustrate ways that family research is central for therapy and for the therapist who is working toward differentiation of self as the basis for change.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

  • strengthen their understanding of family research as part of therapy based in Bowen theory

  • realize the importance of ongoing work on family research as part of differentiation of self for the therapist

  • discuss challenges and overcoming challenges in family research.

Presenter will:  

  • review Differentiation of Self as the basis for change,
  • review Steps Toward Differentiation of Self,
  • discuss and illustrate family research as part of therapy, and
  • discuss challenges and overcoming challenges in family research.

Victoria Harrison, MA, LMFT began coaching in Bowen theory “to take responsibility for her own miserable situation” in 1975 and started as a student in the Georgetown Family Center Postgraduate Training Programs in 1976 and became involved there as a teacher, supervisor, directing programs and conducting research.  She moved to Houston, TX in 1990 where she established a clinical practice and an educational program, Center for the Study of Natural Systems and the Family. She joined the Bowen Center faculty in 1991 and continues to commute to DC where she has directed the Postgraduate Training Program and developed the Online Introduction to Bowen Theory.
